1) Grantmakers In Aging Accepting Proposals for Hurricane
Fund for the Elderly

Deadline: Rolling

Grantmakers In Aging ( http://www.GIAging.org/ ) created the Hurricane Fund for the Elderly to support qualifying nonprofit organizations working to re-establish the older adult service system in areas affected by the 2005 hurri- canes.

HFE will provide support to organizations in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi that are providing exemplary leadership to the building, re-building, and sustaining of communities in which older adults have the opportunity to serve and be served.

Priority areas for the fund include projects that strength- en and expand the capacity of Alabama, Louisiana, and/or Mississippi nonprofits to serve vulnerable older adults in the wake of the devastating hurricanes of 2005. Specific areas of need can include housing, mental health, physical health, social services, and disaster preparedness as it relates to seniors. However, this list is not exhaustive and other areas will be considered. Although not a high priority, the fund will consider proposals that include direct services for seniors.

The size of grants has not been pre-determined and will be considered on an individual basis. As a guideline, projects that focus on advocacy, enhancing community capacity, plan- ning, and technical assistance are likely to be in the range of $50,000 to $100,000, with smaller local initiatives funded between $10,000 and $40,000.

To be eligible for the second round, applications must be received by May 19, 2006. Applications will be accepted after that date and reviewed as long as there are funds available to disburse.

Visit the GIA Web site to download the Call for Proposals.

Libraries

Deadline: July 15, 2006

The Libri Foundation ( http://www.librifoundation.org/ ) was established for the sole purpose of helping rural libraries in the U.S. acquire new, quality, hardcover children's books they could not otherwise afford to buy.
Since 1990, the foundation has donated more than $2.8 mil- lion worth of new children's books to over 2,200 libraries in 48 states.

The foundation works with an applicant library's Friends of the Library or other local organizations and seeks to encourage and reward local support of libraries. The Friends, or other local sponsors, can contribute from $50 to $350, which the foundation matches on a two-to-one ratio.
Thus, a library can receive up to $1,050 worth of books through the foundation's Books for Children program.

OPINION & COMMENTARY: Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, President/CEO, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, "Time To Stop Gambling With America's Health"

"I don't believe in gambling, but some days I think our leaders in Washington, D.C., do. Despite decades of warnings about the toll rising healthcare costs and the growing number of uninsured are taking on our collective health and nation's economy, our leaders continue to leave the issue of the uninsured to chance. By failing to take action, they are gambling with some of the nation's most important assets, the health and livelihood of its hard- working people. And unless they act soon, it's a bet they are likely to lose...."
