I saw that LIFE is going to be working with the Partnership for a Nation of Learners. What exactly is it and how will it work with LIFE?

Well, PNL is something that LIFE works with, really -- at least after we learn the ropes better. PNL is a social action based network of libraries, museums and other non-profits (the category we fall into) partnering together and with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to create community based learning opportunities.  You can read about the effort at http://www.partnershipforlearners.org/

The idea is that we can go farther together than individually -- that partnerships created on the basis of various areas of expertise, interest and strength create more enduring programs, and help stretch funding more effectively.

We were just presented with our first opportunity for such a partnership here in the Tampa area.  The New Port Richey Library -- a little place with big heart that was recently recognized as the best library in Florida! -- is trying to address the fact that 26% of residents in its county (Pasco) are illiterate. Pasco is a fast growing county, but also a relatively economically poor county, with a large immigrant population, and inadequate schools.  The library is trying to form partnerships in the community to help create a literacy program for both adults and children.  We have some resources for that, and are looking at how PNL can help us fulfill our mission of helping bring learning to all in partnership with the New Port Richey Library.

I think there are exciting possibilities here!  If we (the general we) can tap into the abundant, interesting, and enriching learning opportunities available at the community level in our libraries and museums, we can really create a dynamic, living, breathing culture of knowledge that isn't being used to its fullest capacity.

We're still learning about all this, but I think it's definitely worth exploring further.

A new group is has now started in the Tampa area. We meet in south Tampa, but you are welcome no matter where you live. We are focusing mostly on "tweens", but again, all ages and grade levels welcome. All homeschooling styles are welcome as well. We meet for support and encouragement , and we have park days, cookouts, ice cream socials, and twice a year camp outs at Fort DeSoto. Also sale/trade of educational materials . Just lots of homeschooling fun and socialization for everyone.  I can be emailed at south.tampahomeschoolers@yahoo.com , or reached via this board. This is going to be a great year! Learning by desire and not rote is our motto, come share your thoughts as well! ,    jacqueline.nicholetta.;          south.tampahomeschoolers@yahoo.com
